holyport culvert ascot road

Proposed works

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) intend to replace Holyport Green Culvert in December 2024. The works will address structural defects which could affect the integrity and safe use of Ascot Road (A330).

The works will involve replacing the existing steel Armco pipe with a series of buried concrete box units.

The works will require the removal of some trees which are situated within the works area.

When are the works taking place?

The works will be carried out under a full road closure, planned from Friday 6th to Monday 9th December 2024. Subsequent traffic signals from Tuesday 10th December may be required if works overrun.

In the event of poor weather, works will be postponed to the following weekend (commencing Friday 13th).

While the road is closed, pedestrian access will be maintained over the neighbouring footbridge. Vehicular traffic will be diverted via the A308 (Windsor), A332 and A330 (Winkfield). See closure and diversion plan here – one.network

While the signed diversion is significant, it must be suitable for all vehicles which are permitted to use Ascot Road (including HGV’s).

Why are the works happening?

The RBWM has a duty to maintain to public highway network, in accordance with the Highways Act 1980.

Routine condition inspections conducted by the Borough’s consultants highlighted deterioration of the steel pipe beneath the carriageway.

While this does not pose an immediate risk to the public, non-action will  result in continued deterioration.

How will disruption be minimised?

The works have been co-ordinated to avoid other planned / current highway works in the area – Most notably, the Holyport Road utility works and subsequent junction improvements.

The replacement structure will consist of prefabricated concrete units, which can be lifted into place quickly.

Although trees removal is necessary to facilitate construction, this has been limited to those which will have a direct impact on the work. The site set up and construction activities will be carefully co-ordinated to minimise any damage to the Green. Following completion of the works, the area will be reinstated to match the existing however, some regeneration will not take place until spring 2025.
